Coast Guard intercepts panga off Point Loma, detains 14 people

The Coast Guard intercepted a panga off Point Loma on Tuesday and detained 14 Mexican nationals on board, officials said.

The incident was reported around 4:45 p.m. when U.S. Customs and Border Protection notified the Coast Guard of a boat traveling north toward the maritime boundary line, officials said.

The Coast Guard stopped the boat about 20 miles off the coast, investigators said.

A video released by the Coast Guard shows guardsmen pulling up to the side of the boat with sirens on and lights shining on those in the panga. Guardsmen order them to raise their hands before boarding the vessel.

All 14 people were transferred to U.S. Border Patrol custody, officials said.
