Rivalry weekend has arrived in the CFL, and Monday’s matchup at McMahon Stadium is set to be another disappointing outing for one of the highest-paid players in the league. Trevor Knapp breaks it all down below in his latest expert analysis.

When wide receiver Eugene Lewis signed a massive contract with the Edmonton Elks last year, expectations were that the former Oklahoma Sooner would elevate Edmonton’s offense. However, heading into Year 2, things haven’t gone as planned.
Ahead of Monday’s Labour Day classic in Calgary, my Elks vs. Stampeders predictions expect the former All-Star wideout to remain overshadowed on Edmonton’s WR depth chart. Find out more in our CFL picks for Monday, September 2.
Elks vs Stampeders prediction
My best betEugene Lewis Under 52.5 receiving yards (-114 at FanDuel)
My analysisEntering 2024 as the highest-paid non-quarterback in the CFL, Eugene Lewis’ numbers certainly don’t reflect the two-year, $640,000 contract that was issued to him in 2023 by the Edmonton Elks.
A two-time CFL All-Star who led the league in receiving with 1,303 yards back in 2022 with Montreal, Lewis failed to eclipse 1,000 yards in his first season with Edmonton, finding the end zone just three times.
It’s been much of the same story with Edmonton in Year 2. Entering Week 13, Lewis has exceeded 52.5 receiving yards in just five of 11 starts. Meanwhile, Kurleigh Gittens Jr. has emerged as WR No. 1 in Edmonton, having been targeted a team-high 77 times compared to Lewis’ 70.
Now facing a Calgary Stampeders defense that gives up a league-worst 6.5 yards per rush, expect the Elks’ game plan to be extremely run-heavy, featuring the three-headed monster of Kevin Brown, Javon Leake, and Justin Rankin. In his return from the IL last week, Brown impressed with 16 carries for 105 yards.
Although Leake is returning from injury and is now slated as the team’s kickoff returner, his blazing speed will add another dimension to Jarious Jackson’s offense. With McLeod Bethel-Thompson averaging only 28 passing attempts over his last two starts, expect production to remain few and far between for Lewis.
Elks vs Stampeders same-game parlay (SGP)
Eugene Lewis Under 52.5 receiving yards
Jake Maier Over 292.5 passing yards
Along with our best bet, let’s take Jake Maier to eclipse his passing yards total against a shaky Edmonton defense.
The Stampeders’ pivot trails only Bo Levi Mitchell in passing yards (2,624) and now faces an Elks secondary that ranks dead-last in the CFL, allowing 310.0 passing yards per game and 20 completions of 30+ yards.
