Man shot in head in Lemon Grove

A man was found fatally wounded Sunday afternoon after sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported shooting in a Lemon Grove park, sheriff’s officials said.

Deputies got the call at 12:40 p.m. Sunday and found the victim on the ground at Kunkel Park off Lemon Grove Way near Grove Street, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Michael Krugh said in a statement.

A sheriff’s official said the man sustained a gunshot wound to his head. Krugh would only confirm the victim had “trauma to his upper torso.”

Emergency personnel attempted life-saving medical care and medics took the man to a hospital, where he died, Krugh said.

The victim was around 50 years old, sheriff’s Lt. Colin Hebeler said.

Krugh said homicide detectives were still investigating the circumstances of the slaying and the motive, but that “preliminary findings suggest that the suspect and victim were acquainted.” He did not say how the victim may have known his assailant.

Sheriff’s officials initially released the description of a possible suspect, but Krugh said it was too early to say for certain if that person was involved in the killing.

Anyone with information about the slaying was asked to contact the sheriff’s homicide unit at 858-285-6330 during regular business hours, or after hours at 858-868-3200. Anyone with information about the incident can also leave an anonymous tip by calling San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
