San Diego County property taxes are due in 2 days – San Diego Union-Tribune

San Diego County residents and businesses have two days to pay property taxes or face a fine.

Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister said the property taxes, due Thursday at 11:59 p.m., are expected to generate $9.1 billion for the region. There’s about $2.35 billion outstanding, but it is common for payers to wait until the last few days.

If the deadline is missed, a 10% penalty to what is owed is added, as well as a $10 fee. So, for example, if you were delinquent on a property tax payment of $1,000, then you would pay a $100 penalty plus the $10 fee.

Property taxes are used to fund public schools, first responders, road repair and other essential services. The tax collector’s office also oversees an investment fund of $16 billion in assets, such as CDs, treasuries and bonds.

There are two payments each fiscal year. The second payment was due Feb.1, but not delinquent until after April 10. The first payment was due in November.

Property owners can check what they owe online at sdttc.com. Bills can be paid online, by phone at 855-829-3773, by mail or at any of the four branch locations. The county branch locations stay open until 5 p.m.
