The Washington Commanders will play in ‘Northwest Stadium,’ despite being neither north, nor west

In one of the more hilarious examples of stadium rights, the Washington Commanders are poised to kick off the 2024 season in “Northwest Stadium.”

More about the Commanders new naming-rights’ agreement:

The deal does not include any options on a potential new stadium.

It’s an eight-year deal. Agreement does not preclude Washington from opening a new stadium sooner than the expiration of this deal. https://t.co/wW98YfFFeb

Northwest Federal Credit Union was indeed established locally, in Herndon, Virginia. Why did they decide to call a business in Virginia “Northwest”? That’s unclear, because even Herndon isn’t located in northwest Virginia, as it’s east of Dulles International Airport and is located in Fairfax County, with there being 55 other counties located further west in Virginia.

The best guess is that the pub where they dreamed up this bank was located in Northwestern Washington, D.C. — but that’s giving them an excuse they don’t deserve.

In case you need a handy hint of where Northwest Stadium fits in as it pertains to the rest of the United States: If you’re in the white area on the below map you are either north or west of Northwest Stadium. If you life in red it’s northwest of you.

Still, after Cal, Stanford and SMU jointed the ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE we’ve become numb to geographic ridiculousness in sport.
