This year we lamented our children’s screen addiction and the effect it has had on their mental health. That worry reached us through Jonathan Haidt’s “The Anxious Generation,” the bestselling non-fiction book in Canada in 2024.
We also found ourselves drawn to the notion of sudden changes in our behaviour, whether caused by a global pandemic or because of well-meaning social-justice projects. Those ideas came to us via Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Revenge of the Tipping Point,” the retread of “The Tipping Point,” his famed 2000 masterwork on social engineering.
In the final weeks of the year, a Canadian psychologist came out with a surprising new book exploring Bible stories and linking them to ideas and norms that define us all. That book is “We Who Wrestle With God,” by Jordan B. Peterson.
Those books and others — notably “Nexus,” by the Israeli intellectual Yuval Noah Harari (No. 4), “The Serviceberry,” by Indigenous ethnobotanist Robin Wall Kimmerer (No. 9), “War,” by veteran U.S. political writer Bob Woodward (No. 12) and “What This Comedian Said Will Shock You,” by culture commentator Bill Maher (No. 14) — couldn’t be more unlike the end-of-the-year list we published just one year ago.
In December 2023, the big non-fiction book of the year was an autobiography by Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex. Other big winners on last year’s list included Britney Spears, Elon Musk, Barbra Streisand, Arnold Schwarzenegger and our own Geddy Lee.
In sum, the bestselling books of 2023 tended to focus on the lives of individuals.
This year’s most popular books focused on big ideas and societal change.
Which is not to say we aren’t still interested in celebrity lives: Cher, Lisa Marie Presley, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau proved we still enjoy peering into the personal lives of others. Hell, Matthew Perry’s addiction memoir ranked No. 3 and No. 12 on the Canadian non-fiction list for both the original hardcover and subsequent paperback edition, more than a year after his death.
Several categories of fiction dominate this year: there’s romance (Colleen Hoover novels), mystery and thrillers (Louise Penny, Freida McFadden), epic fantasy (Rebecca Yarros and Sarah J. Maas) and, finally, what publishers categorize as “women,” which includes anything by the prolific American writer Kristin Hannah (her “The Women” is the top fiction bestseller this year) and the Australian novelist Liane Moriarty (her “Here One Moment,” ranks No. 19).
I will not belabour the fact that fiction creation has emerged as a predominantly female pursuit. We know that. Still, it is striking that the only male writer on the original fiction list is Stephen King for “You Like It Darker” (No. 16). On the Canadian fiction list, the sole male representative is Rice Waubgeshig, whose “Moon of the Crusted Snow” ranks No. 13.
The big Canadian winner in fiction this year is Carley Fortune, who has published three summertime romances over the past three years. She ranks No. 3 overall on the original fiction list for her most recent book, “This Summer Will Be Different,” and all three books are present and accounted for on the Canadian list. The other big winner is McFadden, who went from virtual unknown to ubiquitous within months, and ends the year with three bestsellers on the list from her “Housemaid” series, written between 2022 and 2024.
Other reflections on the year in books:
•It’s easy to forget that children are the biggest market for books and that the authors making the most money have tapped into this demographic. The author who sold the most books this year is Dav Pilkey, whose “Dog Man” series held down both the No. 1 and 3 spots in the children and young adult category. The kids’ market is dominated by franchises: “The Wild Robot,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” “Cat Kid Comic Club” and “Baby-Sitters Club” all hold spots on this year’s bestselling children’s lists.
•Toronto chef Matty Matheson ranked No. 1 in the cookbook category with his “Matty Matheson: Soups, Salads, Sandwiches.” The buoyant cook has a big following on TikTok but many of us first became aware of him through his restaurant handyman role on the FX series “The Bear.”
•B.C. physician Gabor Maté has long dominated the health and fitness category, this year with three books in the top 10. Note also the presence of “Good Energy: The Surprising Connection Between Metabolism and Limitless Health” (No. 7) by Casey Means and her brother Calley Means. The siblings were prominent in Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s aborted presidential run, and it has been reported that Casey has Donald Trump’s ear on matters of health care in America.
